Indoor vs Outdoor Sauna: Which Should You Choose?

Compare space, access, electrical provision, ventilation and upkeep before deciding between a sauna inside your home and a garden sauna.

Start with how you will use it

An indoor sauna can be convenient to reach from living or changing spaces. A garden sauna creates a separate destination, but the route to it still matters in cold or wet weather. Consider who will use it, how often and where people will change or shower.

Neither setting is automatically simpler. The best choice is often the one where the necessary room, power and ventilation can be provided without disproportionate building work.

02

What an indoor room needs

Measure the clear internal space and ceiling height, not just the external cabin footprint. Allow for door movement, heater clearances and circulation. Check whether a suitable ventilation route is feasible and how the construction connects to the rest of the house.

An upstairs or restricted-access room can introduce delivery and handling constraints. Resolve those before ordering large panels or equipment.

03

What an outdoor project adds

A garden location introduces a base, an external enclosure, weather exposure and a route for electrical services. The ground, boundary position, drainage and delivery access all need consideration.

Planning and building regulations are separate from equipment installation. Seek site-specific advice where needed and do not assume that the same rules apply in every UK nation.

04

Compare ownership, not just installation

Both settings need cleaning, equipment care and ventilation appropriate to the system. Outdoor buildings also require attention to their external finish, roof and weather seals. Follow the cabin and heater manufacturers' maintenance instructions.

Ask for quotations on comparable scopes. Include preparation and ongoing access, not just the visible timber room.
